The headquarters of Tohoku University is located in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. The predecessor of Tohoku University was Tohoku Imperial University (founded in 1907, formerly known as Sendai Medical University), one of the old imperial universities. The school originated from the Sendai domain school "Meiren Yokendo" in 1736. Tohoku Imperial University is the third old imperial university after Tokyo Imperial University and Kyoto Imperial University. In October 1947, Tohoku Imperial University was restructured into Tohoku University, becoming the first university in Japan to accept female and foreign students. In 2007, the school celebrated its 100th anniversary.
