Overview:


The University of Tokyo (とうきょうだいがく), also named UTokyo(とうだい )is A comprehensive national University located in The Munkyo District of Tokyo, Japan. It is one of The top universities of "Super International University Program" of Ministry of Education, Education, Ministry of Science and Technology of Japan. It is a member of the Association of East Asian Research Universities, the Alliance of Asian Universities, the Global University Presidents' Forum, the Conference on Academic Research, the Graduate School of Excellence Initiative, the Leading Graduate School Initiative, and the Mirai Project in Japan.

 

The University of Tokyo was established in 1877. It was formed by the merger of "Tokyo Kaiseong School" and "Tokyo Medical School" during the Meiji Restoration period.The University of Tokyo initially established four departments of law, Science, literature and medicine, and a university preparatory school. It is the first national comprehensive university in Japan, and some of its departments can be traced back to the period of Emperor Ryuyuan. It was renamed "Imperial University" in 1886, which was also the first imperial university established in Japan. Is one of the most famous and prestigious institutions of higher education in Japan. In 1897, it was renamed "Tokyo Imperial University"; In September 1947, after world War II, it was officially named Tokyo University.

 

In 2011, the university, nicknamed Todai, had the second highest number of alumni in the world with CEO positions at Fortune 500 companies, after Harvard. In addition, 15 of Japan's 62 prime ministers were educated at Tokyo University, and five alumni went on to become astronauts. Tokyo is composed of 10 colleges and 15 graduate schools with 30,000 students, 2,100 of whom are from overseas. Unlike Japanese universities, it also offers undergraduate courses taught entirely in English: the East Asia Japan International Course and the Environmental Science International Course. In 2014, the university's Faculty of Science launched an all-English undergraduate transfer program called The Global Science Program. The university has five campuses, located in the bengang, Jocang, Bai, Bai and Nakano districts. Tokyo is a vibrant metropolis with a distinct urban identity and a unique culture, perfect for growing minds and young adventures. The main campus of the township is located in the former site of the house of Maeda, which was once the Lord of Kaga Fan. As a result, it attracts visitors with landmarks such as The Red Gate (Red Gate) and the majestic Yasuda Auditorium. It is also the site of UTokyo's annual May Festival. Other campuses have more modern features. The Komchang campus - home to the College of Arts and Sciences, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and the Graduate School of Mathematical Sciences - has 7,000 freshmen and sophomores. The undergraduate experience at the University of Tokyo is unique as it is the only university in Japan that offers a two-year general education system before students choose a major. The campus has been designated by Japan's Ministry of Education and Science as a "centre of Excellence" for three new areas of research.

  

Until 2021, the University of Tokyo has produced 11 Nobel Prize winners, six Wolf Prize winners, one Fields Medal winner, 16 Japanese prime ministers, and 21 (imperial) Diet speakers.

 

UTokyo is ranked 23rd in the qs World University Rankings 2022, 1st in Japan, 26th in the Soft Science World University Rankings 2020, 36th in The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2021 and 14th in the CWUR World University Rankings 2021. The Times Higher Education World University Reputation Rankings 2020 ranked 10th.
