Korea University (고려대학교) is a private research university in Seoul, South Korea. It is called S.K.Y. together with Seoul National University and Yonsei University. The school is also a member of the Pacific Rim University Alliance, a member of the Asia-Pacific International Trade Education and Research Alliance, a founding member of the Asia-Pacific International Education Association and a founding member of Universitas 21, a BK21 engineering excellence university in Korea, and a member university of the University Hockey League. It was founded in 1905 by Lee Yong-I, who was then the head of the Inner Tibetan Academy of the Korean Empire, with the concept of "education to save the country". The predecessor was a private Bosung College. It was the first higher education institution established by private capital in South Korea.


Korea University has a long history. Its predecessor was the private Bosung Vocational College (사립보성전문학교) founded on May 5, 1905 by Lee Yong-yi (이용익), the then head of the Inner Tibetan Academy of the Korean Empire, on May 5, 1905. It was the first and only modern higher education institution created and managed entirely by North Koreans at that time, and it was the earliest professional school in Korea. It is the first higher education institution established by private capital in South Korea, and it is also the first university in South Korea fully funded and managed by Koreans. Korea University is one of the largest comprehensive universities in South Korea. From 1973 to 1996, Korea University has successively conducted academic exchanges with more than 60 universities in a dozen countries including Japan, the United States, China, France, and Chile.
