University of Southampton is a world-class university located on the southwest coast of England. It is also the Royal University of the United Kingdom, with the title of Soton, a founding member of the Russell University Group, a member of the World University Alliance, the Southern Union of Science and Engineering, the International University Climate Alliance, the World Port City University Alliance, and RENKEI.


The school’s predecessor can be traced back to Hartley College, founded in 1862. The main campus is located in Southampton, Hampshire, England, where the Titanic sailed.


In May 2013, the University of Southampton, together with Oxford University, Cambridge University, Imperial College London, and University College London jointly initiated and established the Southern Alliance for Science and Engineering, which is one of the world's leading research centers. The school is also the founding partner of SETsquared, the world's number one university business incubator by UBI Global.


The University of Southampton is the only university in the UK that has received a five-star research rating from every department of science and technology in the professional ratings of universities in the UK. The university merged with the top art academies in the UK-Winchester College of Art in 1996. The University of Southampton Business School is an elite business school that has obtained the dual international accreditation of AACSB and AMBA.


"Father of the Internet" Tim Berners Lee, Nobel Prize winner Christopher Pisarides, and Quantitative Easing proponent Rechard Werner all teach here. The current President of University College London, Michael Arthur, obtained his undergraduate and doctoral degree in clinical medicine from 1977 to 1986.


The University of Southampton is one of the top ten research universities in the UK.
