University of Malaya (short for UM) is Malaysia’s premier Public Research University. It is located in the capital of Kuala Lumpur. It covers an area of 750 acres (309 hectares). There are many subject areas with world-class reputation. As the largest and most famous university in Malaysia, University of Malaysia is not only a member of the Asian University Alliance, but also an important academic member of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU), as well as a member of the Commonwealth Association of Universities.


The predecessor of the University of Malaya was the King Edward VII Medical College established in 1905 and the Raffles College established in 1929. They merged to form the University of Malaya on October 8, 1949. Together, they can provide greater services-helping to lay the foundations of a new nation by nurturing a generation of skilled and educated people. As a national institution to meet the higher education needs of the Federation of Malaya and Singapore. The university developed rapidly in its first decade of establishment. In 1956, two branches were established in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Legislation was passed in 1961 and the University of Malaya was established on January 1, 1962. After Singapore became independent from Malaysia in 1965, the University of Singapore was renamed the National University of Singapore. In 1973, the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Malaya and the Faculty of Agriculture of Malaya merged into the University of Agriculture of Malaysia (now: University of Putra Malaysia).


Over the years, the University of Malaysia has cultivated many alumni who have made significant contributions to the development of Malaysia, and its graduates enjoy a high reputation in various fields in the country.


In politics, out of nine Malaysian prime ministers, five of them attended UM with Mahathir Mohamad becoming the only prime minister to be elected twice.
