Overview:


The University of British Columbia (UBC) is a public research university with campuses in Vancouver and Kelowna, British Columbia.


The University of British Columbia was founded in 1908 and is located in Vancouver, Canada. It is the oldest university in British Columbia. The university ranks among the top three universities in Canada. UBC, formerly known as McGill University College of British Columbia, was approved for independence in 1915. It is a member of the Canadian U15 Research University Alliance, Pacific Rim University Alliance, Global University Advanced Research Institute Alliance, Universitas 21 and Commonwealth University Association. UBC’s annual research budget is US$600 million, and more than 8,000 projects are funded each year.


UBC includes Vancouver campus (main campus) and Okanagan campus. The Vancouver campus is adjacent to the university endowment site approximately 10 kilometers (6 miles) west of downtown Vancouver. After more than a hundred years of rapid development, UBC has gradually become a world-renowned top comprehensive research university. UBC is the home of TRUMF, the Canadian National Laboratory for Particle and Nuclear Physics, which has the largest cyclotron in the world. In addition to the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Study and the Stuart Bruson Institute for Quantum Matter, UBC and the Max Planck Institute jointly established the first Max Planck Institute in North America to specialize in quantum materials. As one of Canada's largest research libraries, the UBC library system has more than 9.9 million books in its 21 branches. The Okanagan campus was acquired in 2005 and is located in Kelowna, British Columbia.


As of 2020, UBC has trained 8 Nobel Prize winners, 3 Canadian Prime Ministers, 22 3M Excellent Teaching Award winners, 65 Olympic medal winners, 71 Rhodes Scholars, and 10 American Academy of Arts and Sciences And fellows of the Royal Society and 273 fellows of the Royal Society of Canada. Three Canadian prime ministers were educated at UBC, including Canada’s first female prime minister, Kim Campbell, and the current prime minister, Justin Trudeau.


UBC ranks 31st in the 2021 U.S. News World University Rankings, 2021 Times Higher Education World University Rankings 34th, 2020 Shanghai Shanghai Academic Rankings 38th, 2022QS World University Rankings 46th; 2021 Macleans Canada No. 3 in medical and doctoral universities.
