The school's predecessor, Tsinghua Academy, was founded in 1911. After the anti-colonial Boxer Movement, the United States fined China 30 million US dollars as punishment. Tsinghua University was established as a preparatory school for students to travel abroad. The school name "Tsinghua" is derived from the name of the school site "Tsinghua Park". In 1912, it was renamed Tsinghua School. In 1928, it was renamed National Tsinghua University. After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War in 1937, he moved south to Changsha and established the National Changsha Provisional University with Peking University and the private Nankai University. In 1938, it moved to Kunming and renamed the National Southwest Associated University. Moved back to Tsinghua Park in 1946. The People's Republic of China was established in 1949, and Tsinghua University entered a new stage of development. The campus of Tsinghua University is located in Haidian District, northwest of Beijing, the site of the Qing Dynasty imperial garden. Tsinghua University offers 78 undergraduate majors including science, engineering, business, literature, law, and medicine. Except for architecture (five years) and clinical medicine (eight years), all undergraduate degrees require four years to complete. Most of the courses are taught in Chinese, and some courses are taught in English or bilingual.
